The Round-Up: Aviator Sunglasses, Reconsidered
Aviator sunglasses are back and we’re here for it. But this isn’t an edit of the classic, barely-there metal aviator. The pairs catching our eye right now are curvier, chunkier and more substantial; with rounded silhouettes, wider acetate frames and warm tortoiseshell and brown tones that give the familiar shape a completely different feel.
There’s something distinctly retro about them, but not overly nostalgic. The softer curves and heavier frames make them feel more ’70s than Top Gun, and much easier to work into the kind of relaxed, slightly undone outfits we’re drawn to right now.
And perhaps that’s the appeal: they have enough presence to change an otherwise very simple look. A white T-shirt and jeans, an oversized shirt, a fine knit or relaxed tailoring suddenly feels more intentional with a great pair of sunglasses.
The Styling Note
If you haven't worn aviators for years, don't style them as aviators. The easiest way to make the shape feel current is to pair it with pieces that aren't trying too hard: an oversized shirt or tee, relaxed denim, fluid trousers, a simple knit or an easy summer dress.
Keep everything else fairly understated and let the sunglasses bring the attitude. The less expected the pairing, the better they tend to look.
For now, we're particularly drawn to tortoiseshell, amber and warm brown lenses. They have all the attitude of the classic aviator, but feel considerably easier to wear.
